Vertiv, Emerson, and Liebert: One Brand Across Multiple Names

Are they three different companies or a single one with three names? When you see Liebert, Emerson, and Vertiv on a piece of equipment, you are looking at different chapters of the same story.

In the world of critical infrastructure, some names keep coming up: Liebert, Emerson, and Vertiv. Three labels, one trajectory that began more than 60 years ago.

The birth of Liebert

It all started in 1965, when Liebert Corporation was founded in Columbus, Ohio. From the beginning, the company specialized in two technologies that remain its backbone: UPS systems (uninterruptible power supply) and CRAC units (Computer Room Air Conditioning).

Over the following decades, Liebert became a global benchmark in cooling and power for data centers. Its products were recognized for reliability and performance.

The Emerson era

In 2000, Emerson Electric, headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, acquired Liebert and integrated it into a larger division called Emerson Network Power. Under that umbrella, other specialized brands joined: Chloride (power), Avocent (remote infrastructure management), and of course Liebert.

That integration produced a comprehensive offering for data centers: from backup power to intelligent monitoring. For 16 years, Emerson Network Power led the market with a portfolio that combined heritage brands and new acquisitions.

Vertiv is born

In 2016, Emerson sold Emerson Network Power to private equity firm Platinum Equity. One year later, in 2017, that operation was relaunched under a new name: Vertiv.

Since then, products that previously carried the Liebert or Emerson Liebert label are marketed as Vertiv Liebert. It is common to see UPS, PDU, or precision cooling units with any of the three names on existing installations, especially in legacy catalogs or older equipment.

From private company to S&P 500 listed

In 2018, Vertiv debuted on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: VRT). Today it is part of the S&P 500, headquartered in Westerville, Ohio, and employs around 34,000 people across more than 40 countries, with 30 manufacturing and assembly facilities worldwide.

Its chief executive since March 2023 is Giordano Albertazzi, who previously led the European operation and the critical products division of the company.

One story, three chapters

In summary, when you see a Liebert, Emerson, or Vertiv piece of equipment, think of one single company with three successive names. Liebert was the original brand. Emerson was the consolidation stage. Vertiv is the current name, focused on power protection, thermal management, AI infrastructure, and data center services.

Because even when labels change, the mission has not: protecting and optimizing the critical infrastructure of the digital world.
