Schneider Galaxy: the three-phase UPS family for medium and large data centers
The Schneider Electric Galaxy family is probably the world’s best-selling three-phase UPS portfolio for medium and large data centers. Its evolution from the Galaxy 3000 to the Galaxy VL and VX reflects almost two decades of refinement in efficiency, modularity, and management software.
For a project in Mexico, the Galaxy family is usually one of the three main options, alongside Vertiv NXC and Eaton 9395X. This guide summarizes the active series and the selection criteria.
Galaxy VL: the modular UPS from 200 to 1000 kVA
The Galaxy VL is the most recent platform in the family for the 200 to 500 kVA range per unit, scalable up to 1000+ kVA in parallel configuration. Its three-level power conversion technology delivers up to 99% efficiency in eConversion mode without transferring the load to the static bypass.
Galaxy VL key specifications:
- Efficiency: 97% in double conversion; up to 99% in eConversion.
- Per-unit range: 200 to 500 kVA; up to 1000+ kVA in parallel.
- Output power factor: 1.0 (real power equals apparent power).
- Internal modularity: 50 kVA hot-swappable power modules (recent models).
- EcoStruxure compatible: native remote monitoring and management.
When to choose Galaxy VL: data centers from 200 to 1000 kVA where energy efficiency is a priority and where integration with EcoStruxure is valued. It is the most popular option for corporate and colocation data centers in Mexico.
Galaxy VX: the high-power UPS from 1000 to 1500 kVA
The Galaxy VX is the high-power version of the portfolio, designed for large data centers and operations that require 1000 to 1500 kVA in a single unit. It maintains the three-level technology and the eConversion efficiency of the VL.
When to choose Galaxy VX: large corporate data centers, hyperscale operations, sites where a single 1500 kVA unit simplifies the electrical architecture.
Galaxy 5500 / 7000: the legacy platforms
The Galaxy 5500 and 7000 series were for many years the backbone of Schneider’s three-phase portfolio. Although they have been partially replaced by Galaxy VL and VX, they remain active in many existing installations — and Schneider maintains support and spare parts for them.
For data centers that have been operating Galaxy 5500 or 7000 for 10 to 15 years, migration to VL is a natural decision: same family, same control logic, same software platform. Schneider offers migration paths that allow reusing switchgear, battery cabinets, and distribution panels.
Easy UPS 3-Phase: the entry-level option
Although not part of the Galaxy family proper, the Easy UPS 3-Phase is the natural complement for smaller data centers. Its range goes from 10 to 200 kVA, with modular models starting at 50 kVA. For clients already running Easy UPS at one site and looking for brand consistency, the transition to Galaxy VL at the next tier is a natural decision.
Easy UPS 3-Phase reaches 95 to 96% efficiency in double conversion and 99% in ECO mode. It does not have the software depth of Galaxy VL, but it shares the EcoStruxure platform for remote monitoring.
Galaxy family summary table
For an informed decision:
- Below 80 kVA: Easy UPS 3L or 3-Phase. Not Galaxy.
- 80 to 200 kVA: Easy UPS 3-Phase modular. Good price-efficiency balance.
- 200 to 500 kVA: Galaxy VL. The most popular option for corporate data centers.
- 500 to 1000 kVA: Galaxy VL in parallel or Galaxy VX.
- 1000 to 1500 kVA: Galaxy VX.
- Migration from Galaxy 5500/7000: Galaxy VL reuses infrastructure.
The EcoStruxure factor
The Galaxy family stands out from the competition not because of its hardware (which is comparable to Vertiv NXC or Eaton 9395X), but because of its software. EcoStruxure Power Monitoring Expert and EcoStruxure Power Operation are mature platforms with a large installed base, native integrations with most BMS and DCIM solutions on the market, and local technical support in Mexico.
For companies already running EcoStruxure at other facilities, specifying Galaxy maintains platform consistency and reduces the operational learning curve. It is one of the strongest arguments Schneider uses to win bids in the corporate segment.
