PUE, CUE, WUE, ERE: The Four Sustainability Metrics Every Data Center Manager Should Report

PUE is the most well-known energy efficiency metric, but a modern data center is measured across four distinct dimensions. If you only report PUE, you only have one piece of the puzzle.

Here is the ABCs of the four standard metrics (PUE, CUE, WUE, and ERE), what they measure, how they are calculated, and why they matter.

PUE: the facility’s energy

PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) is the original metric from The Green Grid. It measures how much total energy the data center consumes for every watt that reaches the servers.

  1. Formula: PUE = Total DC Energy / IT Load Energy.
  2. How to interpret it: PUE = 1.0 would be perfect (all energy goes to IT, with no losses). PUE = 1.2 is state of the art. PUE = 1.5 is typical efficient operation. PUE = 2.0 or higher indicates significant opportunities for improvement.

CUE: the carbon footprint

CUE (Carbon Usage Effectiveness) incorporates the carbon emissions of the energy you consume. Two data centers with the same PUE can have very different carbon footprints depending on where their electricity comes from.

  1. Formula: CUE = Equivalent CO2 Emissions / IT Load Energy.
  2. Why it matters: in Mexico, the electricity generation mix changes hour by hour and by region. Buying certified renewable energy reduces CUE without touching the physical PUE.

WUE: the water

WUE (Water Usage Effectiveness) measures how much water the data center consumes, primarily for the cooling and humidification system.

  1. Formula: WUE = Annual site water in liters / IT Load Energy.
  2. Why it matters: in areas with water stress (part of Mexico falls into that category), water consumption becomes an issue of social license to operate and operational viability. Air-to-air free cooling eliminates consumption.

ERE: the reused energy

ERE (Energy Reuse Effectiveness) measures the real impact of the data center’s circular economy efforts, calculating how the efficiency indicator decreases when residual energy is reused off-site. • Formula: (Total Data Center Energy – Reused Energy) / IT Load Energy • Why it matters: ERE works as an extension of PUE. If your data center has a PUE of 1.5, but it reuses residual heat to power a greenhouse or a hot water system in a nearby hospital, that energy is subtracted from net consumption. This drives your ERE down (for example, to 1.2), mathematically demonstrating the environmental benefit of the facility).

How to report the four

For internal sustainability reports, presenting the four metrics in a unified dashboard is sufficient. For external reports (investors, clients), the most requested data is PUE plus the electricity source (renewable mix vs. conventional). All four give you a complete picture; with fewer, you are only exposing part of the story.

Metrics are not the goal. They are the instrument. If you have the metric but no one uses it to make decisions, it is just another report. If you don’t have it but your team knows exactly what is happening, you are operating better than most.
