Hi-Ref in Latin America: the Italian brand’s strategy to grow in the Mexican market
Hi-Ref is one of the Italian brands with the longest tradition in chillers and heat pumps for industrial processes — and, by extension, for medium and high-density data centers. Founded in 2001 in Padua (Viale Spagna 31/33), the company has built its reputation on precision mechanical engineering and a strong orientation toward free cooling, which in much of Mexico’s climate represents a significant operational advantage.
Unlike brands of Anglo-Saxon or German origin, Hi-Ref entered the Latin American market more discreetly. Its presence was concentrated for years on industrial clients — pharmaceutical, food, manufacturing — that knew the brand for its process chillers. The leap into the data center market is more recent, and responds to a strategic decision by the company.
The Hi-Ref portfolio for critical infrastructure
The Hi-Ref line for data centers is built around three main families:
- Compression and free cooling chillers (TCE, TBA, TCH): designed for chilled water integration in data centers. They enable mechanical free cooling operation when the outside temperature drops below a certain threshold, drastically reducing compressor consumption.
- HPW heat pumps: they take advantage of residual heat from the data center to heat water or air in adjacent facilities — hospitals, hotels, industrial processes — opening the door to circular energy efficiency models.
- Condensing units and dry coolers: complement for DX systems or for free cooling dissipation in temperate climates.
All Hi-Ref products are manufactured in Italy, mainly at the Padua plant. The brand has no local manufacturing in Latin America, which impacts delivery times for large projects but also guarantees consistency in quality control.
The strategy for entering Latin America
Hi-Ref operates in Mexico and the rest of Latin America through a network of specialized distributors and integrators, rather than with its own sales force. This decision follows the European strategy of the brand: focus on engineering and manufacturing, leaving local integration to partners who know the regional market.
In the Mexican market, Hi-Ref has gained presence in projects where the integrator is looking for an Italian alternative to Stulz or Vertiv with a profile more oriented to mechanical free cooling. The price factor is competitive in the mid-range, and the mechanical quality of compressors and frames is one of its historical differentiators.
When it makes sense to specify Hi-Ref
Hi-Ref is a solid option when:
- The data center is in a temperate climate zone (central and northern Mexico) where free cooling can operate more than 6 months per year.
- The project prioritizes energy efficiency and 10+ year TCO over initial price.
- The integrator has experience with European brands and can handle the import logistics and commissioning.
- A viable heat reuse model exists (domestic hot water heating, adjacent building heating, industrial processes).
- The client already works with an Italian brand and is looking for operational continuity.
What Hi-Ref does not solve
Hi-Ref is not a brand of UPS, PDU, or rack-level DX precision cooling. Its strength is in chilled water production and macro free cooling. For high-density data centers with rack loads above 30 kW, it is complemented (not replaced) with in-row or rear-door units from brands like Vertiv, Schneider, or Stulz.
