DCIM software: comparison of the 5 leading platforms (Schneider, Vertiv, Nlyte, Sunbird, Siemens)
A DCIM (Data Center Infrastructure Management) is the software layer that tells you what is happening in your data center in real time. If you still operate with spreadsheets and SLAs by feel, this article is for you.
Below is a technical comparison of the five commercial platforms most commonly deployed in corporate data centers across Mexico and Latin America.
What a DCIM does (and what it does not)
A DCIM integrates three layers: environmental monitoring (temperature, humidity, pressure), electrical monitoring (PDU, UPS, breaker), and asset management (racks, occupied U, devices). What a DCIM does not do is replace the building BMS or your IT team’s ITSM. It is a facilities layer, not an applications layer.
The five most common platforms
- Schneider Electric EcoStruxure IT. A modern platform from the UPS and PDU manufacturer that inherited its installed base from StruxureWare. Native integration with its own hardware. Licensing by device or by rack. Moderate learning curve.
- Vertiv Environet (formerly Trellis). A platform from the critical-infrastructure manufacturer. Strong in 3D room visualization. Per-device licensing. Deep integration with Vertiv UPS equipment.
- Nlyte Data Center Infrastructure Management. Vendor-independent software. Strong in capacity management and planning. Licensing by racks and by devices. Steep learning curve but robust reporting.
- Sunbird dcTrack (now part of a larger group). Platform focused on change management and connectivity. Strong in cabling and physical connectivity. Licensing by user and by device.
- Siemens Data Center Manager. Part of the Siemens Desigo CC suite. Strong in BMS building integration. Licensing by points or by device. Steep curve, installed base mainly in Europe and Asia.
How to choose among the five
There is no absolute winner. The choice depends on three concrete things:
- What infrastructure you already have. If your installed base is 80% Schneider UPS + PDU, starting with EcoStruxure IT reduces integration time. If you have a mix of manufacturers, a vendor-independent platform like Nlyte or Sunbird reduces dependencies.
- Which team will operate it. The platforms differ in operational complexity. Schneider and Vertiv have consoles with ready-made templates. Nlyte and Sunbird let you configure nearly everything, which is power but also responsibility.
- What your priority is. If your critical problem is capacity and growth, Nlyte excels. If it is pure operational monitoring, EcoStruxure or Vertiv. If it is physical connectivity, Sunbird dcTrack. If it is building-side integration, Siemens DCM.
A DCIM does not solve problems whose root causes you have not clearly identified. Before buying the platform, it pays to have a rack inventory, a connectivity map, and the KPIs you want to report. The tool comes after.
