Are Data Centers the Libraries of the 21st Century?
3 Lessons on Data Centers: Reflections in the Digital Era
Throughout history, libraries have been key centers of knowledge. Today, data centers have taken on this role, storing and processing the vast digital information of our time. Below, we explore three lessons that data centers teach us, inspired by the ancient libraries.
1. Data Centers: The New Guardians of Knowledge
Just like the ancient libraries, data centers store and distribute knowledge. The difference is that today they no longer just hold data: they also run compute-intensive workloads like AI model training, real-time analytics, and edge processing. Information is managed across on-premise facilities, edge nodes, and cloud providers.
2. Common Challenges: Security and Protection
Both libraries and data centers face similar threats: physical attacks, cyberattacks, operational failures, and natural disasters. In 2026 the threat landscape has expanded with ransomware targeting critical infrastructure, AI-powered attacks, and a higher frequency of extreme climate events affecting power grids. IT teams now operate under zero-trust architectures and continuous monitoring (DCIM) to anticipate incidents.
3. Longevity: Can Data Centers Withstand the Test of Time?
The Library of Alexandria survived for centuries, but data centers have already accumulated more than five decades of history: the first commercial facilities date back to the 1960s. Today two opposing trends coexist: short refresh cycles for AI hardware (3–5 years) and modular designs that extend the useful life of the facility. Longevity, more than in the structure itself, plays out in the capacity to adapt.
Lessons from the Past for the Digital Future Data centers, like libraries, are fundamental to knowledge. We must ensure that their infrastructure remains secure, efficient, and adaptable in the long term, so they continue to be the pillar of the digital knowledge of the future.
